The Supreme Court of India has issued an order regarding the protocols that police officers must follow when conducting media briefings related to criminal investigations. The court has directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to create a comprehensive manual outlining guidelines for conducting media briefings, specifying what information can be shared with the media, and emphasizing the importance of avoiding media trials. The Director Generals of Police (DGPs) have also been instructed to provide suggestions for the development of this manual. The court has underscored that any information disclosed by the police during media briefings should be objective and should not interfere with the administration of justice. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been granted a three-month period to prepare the manual.
